RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Treating patients with care and respecting their cultural values are key factors necessary to enhance the quality of nursing care. AIM: The objective of this study was to explore and describe the difficulties experienced by hospitalized Syrian refugees and their expectations from nurses and hospital administration. METHODS: We used a descriptive qualitative research approach to engage 30 Syrian refugees undergoing treatment in internal medicine who met the study criteria. Data were collected using a descriptive questionnaire and a semi-structured interview with open-ended interview questions. Interview transcripts were analysed using an inductive coding approach. Descriptive questions were analysed and presented via number and percentage. Other data were assessed using content analysis methods. RESULTS: Three major themes were developed following the analysis of the interviews. We determined that the refugees who participated in the study experienced difficulties in communicating, meeting their personal needs and correctly following treatment instructions. They also had certain expectations from the hospital administration and nurses, and they felt gratitude for both nurses and the nation of Turkey. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study, shared with the executive administration of the hospital, may result in new policies which will help new Syrian refugee patients and patients with similar needs to have better experience related to patient care, communications and meeting personal needs. IMPLICATION FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY: It is important that nurses and other healthcare provider consider the difficulties and expectations of refugees regarding healthcare services and include same in the development of provider training programmes. Development of public health welfare and employment law and policies help to lay the groundwork for successful integration of refugees in new cultures and countries.

RESUMO

We present a case of dynamic exophthalmos secondary to an orbital varix. Objectives of this paper are to describe this rare entity and review its etiology, diagnosis and treatment options. A 21-year-old woman presented complaining of exophthalmos in the right eye on bending forward. Neuroimaging studies revealed an irregularly shaped mass located in the posterior intra-extraconal region adjacent to the orbital roof. Surgical and interventional endovascular therapies were considered, but due to the complex nature of the lesion the patient was followed-up conservatively. Orbital varix may cause dynamic exophthalmos and most patients may be managed conservatively. Patients harboring non-treatable orbital varix should be advised to avoid any strenuous exercises and postures which may increase intraorbital pressure.

RESUMO

Intracranial lipomas are rare lesions. Intracranial lipoma associated with a subcutaneous lipoma is extremely rare. Various vascular abnormalities have been described in association with intracranial lipoma, including distension, kinking, or narrowing of arteries and veins; arteriovenous malformation; and aneurysm. To our knowledge, association of sagittal sinus fenestration, falcine sinus, and absent straight sinus with intraextracranial lipoma has not been reported before. We report the imaging findings of an infant with interhemispheric and subcutaneous lipoma associated with falcine sinus and sagittal sinus fenestration.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to determine the MR imaging characteristics of normal acetabular labra on both hips. Three hundred sixty acetabular labra on both hips of 180 asymptomatic volunteers were examined on a 0.5-T MR unit utilizing a superficial coil. T1-weighted and T2-weighted gradient-echo sequences (TR/TE/FA 169/10 ms/40 degrees, and 316/25 ms/40 degrees, respectively) were used. The volunteers were classified into five age groups (10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50 + years of age). The shape (triangular, flat, round, absent), size, and the presence of intralabral foci of increased intensity (diffuse, linear, central, or basal) were noted on both labra in each volunteer, and symmetry-asymmetry of these features were investigated. The most common labrum shape was triangular, whereas absence of labrum was the least common condition. A difference of labral shapes between both hips was present in approximately 15% of volunteers. A size difference of over 25% between each labrum was noted in approximately one-fourth of volunteers. An age-related pattern of intralabral intensity increase was noted on both MR sequences (more commonly on T1-weighted gradient-echo images). Shape differences and age-related intensity changes of the acetabular labrum in the MR imaging of the hips were confirmed, and the possibility of variability of the labra, with regard to the shape and size, on both hips of the same individual was documented.

RESUMO

Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a highly vascular tumour which occurs almost exclusively in adolescent males. Although it is histologically benign, it may cause serious clinical problems because of its tendency to bleed profusely during surgery. This paper presents the first case of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma in a patient with haemophilia A, another well-known disease of bleeding tendency. In this case the tumoural mass was surgically removed with effective factor VIII replacement without any bleeding complication.

RESUMO

CT and MRI findings in three patients, two of them siblings, with microcephalia vera are presented. In this rare entity, a very small brain with an extremely thin, smooth cortex and increase surrounding cerebrospinal fluid are observed.
